About Santorini Island Guide

Santorini Island Guide is an independent, unofficial guide to visiting Santorini: which village to sleep in, which sights need a ticket, how the buses, the cable car and the boats actually work, and which tours are worth the money. We are not the Municipality of Thira, the Greek Ministry of Culture, any museum, winery or boat operator. The whole guide starts on the Santorini, Greece travel guide homepage.

Why This Site Exists

Santorini looks simple on a map and is easy to get wrong in practice. The famous views sit on a cliff, so the cable car and the stairs decide your arrival day if you come by ship. The two archaeological sites close on different weekdays, the boat days depend on the summer wind, and the land path to Red Beach has been closed for rockfall for years. A plan built from photographs alone usually loses a day to one of these.

So every price, opening hour and closing day here is read off the official page of the place itself. Where the official source says nothing, the page says so instead of borrowing a plausible figure from a blog.

Where The Information Comes From

Ticket prices, hours and free days for Akrotiri, Ancient Thera and the two museums in Fira come from the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades (cyclades.culture.gov.gr), the Ministry of Culture site odysseus.culture.gr and the Hellenic Heritage ticketing site hh.gr. Bus fares come from KTEL Santorini (ktel-santorini.gr), cable car fares and timetables from the operator scc.gr. Climate figures are thirty-year averages computed from ERA5 reanalysis data, and sea temperatures from the Open-Meteo marine record.

Tour prices, durations, ratings and review counts are the booking platforms' own published numbers. Each comparison states the quarter its figures are current for.

How Prices Are Shown

Prices are shown in US dollars first, with the official euro figure in brackets, because that is the figure you hand over on the island. Dollar figures are converted at one fixed European Central Bank reference rate for the whole site, and what Santorini costs refreshes to the day's rate in your browser. Tour prices are the platforms' own listings in dollars and are never converted.

How We Re-Check

We do not operate or personally conduct these tours. Official prices and hours are re-read every quarter, and sooner when a site announces a change. Opinions on the pages are labelled as ours: when a page says "our estimate" or "our pick", that is a judgement, not an official figure.

How The Site Earns

Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you book a tour or a hotel through them, the booking platform pays us a small commission and your price stays the same. The networks are listed on the affiliate disclosure page.

Links to official sources are never affiliate links, and no operator can pay to be listed or ranked.
