Imerovigli, Santorini: The Highest Village On The Caldera Rim

Imerovigli sits on the highest stretch of the caldera rim, between Firostefani and the path to Oia. It is the calmest of the three caldera villages, with the same cliff-edge views and a fraction of the crowds. This guide covers the walk through it, Skaros Rock, buses, and where to stay. It is part of our Santorini, Greece travel guide.

Quick answer Imerovigli in short

Imerovigli is the smallest and quietest of the three caldera villages on Santorini, on the rim between Firostefani and Oia. It is worth visiting for the highest views on the rim, the walk out to Skaros Rock and direct access to the Fira to Oia caldera path. Pick it over Oia if you want the same scenery with fewer people and quieter evenings.

Key takeaways

Imerovigli compared with its neighbours

The three caldera villages share one cliff and one view, so the choice comes down to crowds, price and what is on your doorstep. Here is how Imerovigli lines up.

What Imerovigli is and why it exists

A short history and a plain description of the village, so you know what you are walking into.

A village built on the safest high ground

Imerovigli sits at roughly the highest point of the caldera rim, on the road between Fira and Oia. Like the other rim villages it grew as an agricultural settlement on the island's east-facing, sheltered land, well back from the dangerous cliff edge. Its name is usually explained as a corruption of the words for day watch, a lookout post in daylight. The village was damaged in the 1956 earthquake, like much of Santorini, and its modern life began when tourism moved onto the rim in the decades after.

What makes it different from Fira and Oia is scale. It is small, essentially one main path along the rim plus side lanes, and it never developed Fira's shops or Oia's castle. Its landmark is not a building in the village but the rock in front of it: Skaros, the stump of the medieval castle-town that guarded the island for centuries. Read the full story on our Skaros Rock page.

Practically, that means you come to Imerovigli for the view and the walking, not for a list of sights. The caldera is the sight. If you want museums and ruins, they are in Fira and Akrotiri, both an easy bus or drive away.

Who the village suits, and who it does not

Imerovigli suits three kinds of traveller. Couples on a honeymoon or anniversary trip who want a caldera-view terrace and quiet evenings get the best version of it here, which is why it appears high on our Santorini honeymoon shortlist. Walkers get the best access to the rim path, with Skaros Rock at one end and the Fira to Oia hike starting at the other. Photographers get the highest rim angles with fewer people in frame, and the photoshoot operators know it.

It does not suit everyone. If you want to step out of your room into a street of bars and cheap tavernas, stay in Fira, because Imerovigli's eating options are mostly attached to hotels and the village goes quiet after dark. If you are travelling on a tight budget, look at cheap hotels in Santorini in Fira or the east coast instead, because rim-view rooms here are priced for the view. Families with small children should think twice about the cliff-edge paths, or read our notes on Santorini with kids before booking.

Our pick: if the trip is a special occasion and the budget covers a rim room, Imerovigli is the village we would choose over Oia for the calm alone.

The walk through Imerovigli, stop by stop

The village is best understood on foot, in one line along the rim. Here is the order to do it in.

From the bus stop to the rim path

Buses from Fira stop on the main road at the edge of the village, a short walk down side lanes to the caldera side. Head downhill and towards the sea and you will hit the rim path, which is the spine of the village. Turn left and you are walking towards Firostefani and Fira. Turn right and you are heading towards the quiet end of the village and, past it, the dirt path out to Skaros Rock.

The whole built-up stretch takes fifteen to twenty minutes at a stroll, our estimate, and that is the point: Imerovigli is a village you can see properly in an hour and then simply sit in. The paths are paved but narrow, with steps in places and drops on the caldera side, so watch children and mind your footing after dark, when lighting is patchy. Sensible shoes beat sandals on the rim, especially where the path is polished smooth.

The practical rhythm is simple. Come in the morning for empty paths and clean light on the white houses, come back in the late afternoon for the walk out to the rock, and stay for the sunset from any gap in the wall. You do not need a viewpoint ticket or a queue here, unlike Oia.

StopWhy it matters
Main road bus stopYour arrival point, lanes lead down to the rim path
The rim pathThe village spine, highest views on the caldera
The western endQuietest stretch, start of the path to Skaros Rock
Sunset gaps in the wallFree sunset viewing without the Oia crowds

Out to Skaros Rock

From the western end of the village a path drops and then climbs out to Skaros, the headland rock that is Imerovigli's one real monument. In medieval times this was the site of a castle-town, the fortified settlement listed by the Ephorate of Antiquities as the medieval castle-city of Skaros, and it guarded the island through the centuries of pirate raids. Little built fabric survives. What you get today is a short walk, free of charge, and a viewpoint that looks back along the rim towards Fira and out over the caldera towards Thirassia.

Allow under an hour for the return walk from the village at an easy pace, our estimate. The path is rough in places and the final section onto the rock itself involves uneven ground, so it is not a walk for anyone unsure on their feet, and there is no shade or water out there. Go early or late in summer.

Combine it with the rest of the rim on foot by continuing north towards Oia after the rock, or treat it as a standalone evening walk. Either way it is the single best free thing to do in the village, and it features on our list of free things to do in Santorini.

Where to look, and where to swim nearby

Imerovigli has no beach of its own. The views are the draw, and the swimming needs a plan.

The best viewpoints in and around the village

The highest views on the caldera rim are the village's selling point, and they come free from the public path. The stretch between the middle of the village and the western end gives you the widest look down at the caldera, with the volcanic islets of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni in the middle and Thirassia on the far rim. From the path out to Skaros Rock you look back at the whole village terraced above you, which is the shot the photoshoot operators use.

For a wider frame, the rim walk in either direction adds the neighbours: south to Firostefani with the Three Bells of Fira below, north along the caldera path towards Oia, which is the classic Fira to Oia hike in its best half. Blue domes appear all along the rim. The famous ones photographed in Oia have their own page at Santorini blue domes if you want to chase them properly.

One honest warning: the rim path here is a working cliff edge, with unfenced drops in places. Keep to the path, keep hold of children, and do not climb walls for a photo. It is a calm village, but the cliff does not care.

  • Rim path mid-village: the widest caldera view, best in the morning light
  • Skaros Rock path: the view back at the village, best late afternoon
  • The northern edge: start of the walk to Oia, quietest at dawn

Swimming near Imerovigli

There is no beach in Imerovigli, and the rocks below the rim are not a swimming spot you should try to reach. The nearest easy swimming is in the east coast beach towns, and the way to get there is the bus through Fira. Our pick of the close options is Perissa beach for black sand and a long swimmable stretch, with Kamari as the alternative with a promenade. Compare them all on our Santorini beaches page.

For something more memorable, take a boat. The volcano trips from Fira's Old Port combine a walk on Nea Kameni with a swim in the warm iron-rich springs at Palea Kameni, and the sailing and catamaran cruises add swim stops along the south coast. See the options on our Santorini boat tours page. Remember the €5 volcano park fee is paid on the island on top of most boat tickets.

A middle option: walk or bus to Fira, ride the cable car down to the Old Port at $11.19 (€10) one way, and swim off the rocks near the port area on a calm morning. It will not be a beach day, but it is a caldera swim without a tour ticket.

Eating and drinking in Imerovigli

Small village, hotel-led food scene. Know what to expect before you book your evenings here.

What the food scene is actually like

Imerovigli's restaurants are mostly attached to or run by the hotels along the rim, aimed at guests who want a table with a view rather than a night out. That shapes the experience in three ways. The setting is usually excellent, with caldera terraces and sunset tables. The prices sit at the top of the island's range, since you are paying for the terrace. And the choice is limited: this is not a village where you wander between ten tavernas comparing menus.

The practical move is to treat Imerovigli as your sunset-dinner village and keep Fira as your everyday food base. Fira is a short walk along the rim through Firostefani or a $2.46 (€2.20) bus ride away, and it has the island's widest everyday choice. Our where to eat guide covers the island's restaurants, and our Santorini food page explains what to order once you sit down: fava, tomato fritters, white eggplant and the local Assyrtiko wines, which you can also taste properly at the wineries or at Santo Wines above the caldera.

If cooking is the point of the trip rather than eating out, look at a Santorini cooking class on a non-sunset evening and keep your rim table for the night that matters.

Everyday cheap eatingFira, walk or $2.46 (€2.20) bus

Drinks, evenings and the quiet hours

Set expectations honestly: Imerovigli has almost no nightlife, and that is either its charm or its problem depending on the trip you are planning. There are hotel bars along the rim where non-guests can usually take a terrace table for a drink at sunset, and the calm after dark is real. If you want bars that stay open and a town that hums, that is Fira, and we have a full page on Santorini nightlife for exactly that night of the holiday.

The rhythm we would suggest is to flip the usual plan. Watch the sunset from the public rim path or from the walk back from Skaros Rock, eat late in the village, and save Fira for the one night you want noise. Book rim tables ahead in high season, because the terraces with the best west-facing lines fill first, and ask about the resilience fee when you settle the bill at a hotel, since it is charged per room per night from April to October, €2 to €15 depending on the star rating and €8 for short-term rentals.

Getting to Imerovigli, and parking

Buses, cars and the rim path all reach the village. Here is the honest ranking.

By bus, by car, on foot

The KTEL bus from Fira to Imerovigli costs $2.46 (€2.20), with a night fare of $3.13 (€2.80), and drops you on the main road at the edge of the village. Departure times are seasonal and only published in the KTEL's own PDF, so check the current timetable rather than trusting an old blog, and see our getting around Santorini page for how the network fits together. The bus is our pick for a day visit, because parking is the village's weakest point.

By car or ATV, you take the main Fira to Oia road and turn off at the village. Parking is on the main road and in small side areas, it is scarce at sunset in high season, and it is not stated how many spaces exist in total, so treat a space as a bonus rather than a plan. If you are renting, read our Santorini car rental page first, including the licence rules for ATVs that can leave you uninsured.

On foot, the rim path from Fira through Firostefani to Imerovigli is an easy, flat-ish walk with the view the whole way, and it is the opening stretch of the Fira to Oia hike, about 10 km end to end and 3 to 5 hours, our estimate. Guided versions are listed above if you want company. From the airport, the bus route runs to Fira via Kamari and Monolithos for $2.46 (€2.20), then change for Imerovigli.

When to come to Imerovigli

Season and time of day both change the village completely. Here is how to pick both.

The season, month by month in brief

May, early June, late September and October are the sweet months in our estimate: warm enough for a swim, calm enough to enjoy the rim, and short of the peak crush. July and August bring the full crowd, the strongest heat and the meltemi wind, which is the reason boat trips get cancelled, so build a plan B into any sailing day. The full temperature and rainfall tables live on our Santorini weather page, and our best time to visit Santorini guide makes the seasonal call properly. For a single-month deep dive, see our page on Santorini in October.

Winter is a different village. Many rim hotels close, the terraces empty out and the buses run thinner, but the caldera does not go anywhere, and prices drop. If quiet is the goal, read our Santorini in winter notes before booking, and check that your chosen hotel is actually open.

Sea temperatures range from a 17.1 °C February low to a 25.9 °C August high, so swimming is comfortable from roughly June through October. The two hottest months for walking the rim are July and August, with sea-moderated average highs around 26 °C, so start any long walk early in those months.

Our pick: late September. The sea is at its warmest after the summer, the light is soft, and the village feels like itself again.

MonthsWhat to expect
May, June, September, OctoberWarm, swimmable, busy but workable
July, AugustHottest and busiest, meltemi wind cancels boats
November to AprilQuiet, some hotels closed, cool sea
January, FebruaryMildest winter, averages around 13 °C high

The time of day, and beating the crowds

Within any season, the day has a clear shape in Imerovigli. Morning is the village at its best: empty paths, clean light on the white walls, and the rim to yourself before the day visitors walk up from Fira. Midday brings the heat and the walkers, and the narrow rim path gets shoulder to shoulder in peak season. Late afternoon belongs to Skaros Rock and the sunset, when the village fills briefly and then drains again once the light goes.

The simple tactics: do the village walk and your photos in the morning, swim or hide through the middle of the day, then walk out to Skaros an hour or so before sunset and watch the light fall from the path rather than from a packed terrace. Sunset times shift through the year, and our Santorini sunset page covers the best spots island-wide if you want to compare.

If a photoshoot is on your list, book the earliest slot you can. The light is softer, the paths are emptier, and the flying dress operators will thank you for not fighting a crowd. Prices for the shoots are in the table above.

Photography in Imerovigli

The highest rim, the rock and the blue domes make this a working set for photographers. Here is how to shoot it well.

Angles, light and booking a shoot

Imerovigli gives you three shots that Oia cannot. First, the elevated look along the rim itself, white villages stepping down towards Fira with the caldera behind. Second, the view back at the village from the Skaros path, which frames the whole terraced cliff in one image. Third, quiet blue domes. The rim has blue-domed churches without the queues that form at the famous Oia domes, and with some patience you can get a clean frame at almost any hour. Our Santorini photoshoot page lists more spots island-wide.

Light follows the same rule as everywhere on the west rim: the village faces the sunset, so the hour before sunset is warm and the morning is flat but empty. Our pick is morning for people-free architecture and the golden hour for the caldera shots. Do not climb walls or step past fences for an angle. The drops along the rim are real and unfenced in places.

If you want a professional in the frame with you, the shoots in the table above all work from here. The flying dress with pick-up is the full production at $148.73 for 90 minutes, or the private photo walk in Oia at $111.20 per group if you would rather shoot the classic domes and let Imerovigli stay quiet.

  • Morning: empty rim paths, flat light, best for architecture
  • Golden hour: warm caldera light, book shoot slots now
  • Skaros path: the one wide shot of the whole village

Imerovigli questions, answered

Is Imerovigli better than Oia?

It depends on what you want. Oia has the castle, the famous blue domes and the widest choice of shops, and it is packed at sunset. Imerovigli has the highest rim views, the walk to Skaros Rock and far fewer people, with thinner food options. Our pick is Imerovigli to stay and Oia to visit.

Is it worth visiting Imerovigli?

Yes, even if you sleep elsewhere. The village is free to walk, the rim views are the highest on the caldera, and the path to Skaros Rock is one of the island's best short walks. It also sits on the Fira to Oia hike, so most rim walkers pass through anyway.

Is Imerovigli a good place to stay in Santorini?

It is our pick for a quiet, special-occasion stay, with caldera-view rooms and calm evenings. It is a poor match for tight budgets, for nightlife and for anyone who wants restaurants on the doorstep. Compare it with the other bases on our where to stay page before you commit.

How do I get to Imerovigli from Fira?

The KTEL bus costs $2.46 (€2.20) and stops on the main road at the village edge, with seasonal departure times published in the KTEL PDF. The rim path on foot through Firostefani takes well under an hour at an easy pace, our estimate, and is the nicer way to arrive.

Is there a beach in Imerovigli?

No. The village sits on cliffs with no beach below that you should try to reach. For swimming, bus to Perissa or Kamari on the east coast, or take a boat from Fira's Old Port. Our Santorini beaches guide compares them all.

Can you walk from Imerovigli to Oia?

Yes, along the caldera path, which is the northern half of the Fira to Oia route. The full walk is about 10 km and 3 to 5 hours, our estimate, with no official length published. Wear real shoes, carry water, and skip it in the July and August midday heat.

What is Imerovigli known for?

Three things. The highest caldera views of any village on the rim, the medieval castle rock of Skaros just off the village, and its place on the rim hiking path between Fira and Oia. It is also one of the quietest places to sleep with a caldera view.

Is Imerovigli expensive?

Caldera-view rooms are priced at the top of the island's range, and most restaurants are hotel terraces. Costs drop sharply on the main road side of the village and in Fira, a $2.46 (€2.20) bus ride away. Our Santorini costs page breaks down a full day's budget.
