Santorini in October sits in a sweet spot: the summer crowds are gone, the sea is still at 23.1 °C and hotel rates ease back from their August peak. This page gives you the October weather numbers, what closes and when, what things cost and which Santorini tours are worth your money this month. It is part of our Santorini, Greece travel guide.
Quick answer October in brief
October is one of the best months for Santorini in october travel: daytime highs average 20.7 °C (69 °F), the sea holds 23.1 °C and rain falls on about 3 or 4 days of the month. Crowds drop sharply after the first week and cruise calls are cheaper for the lines, which keeps prices trending down. Some beach clubs and caldera bars start closing late in the month.
Key takeaways

October against the other months
These are sea-moderated averages from 30 years of weather data for the island. A land thermometer in Fira reads a couple of degrees higher in the day, so treat the highs as conservative. Rain days and sea temperature are the numbers that decide a beach month.
| Month | High | Low | Sea | Rain days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| May | 20.1 °C (68 °F) | 16.3 °C (61 °F) | 19.3 °C | 2.0 |
| June | 24.0 °C (75 °F) | 20.2 °C (68 °F) | 22.7 °C | 0.6 |
| July | 26.1 °C (79 °F) | 22.4 °C (72 °F) | 24.6 °C | 0.1 |
| August | 26.2 °C (79 °F) | 22.9 °C (73 °F) | 25.9 °C | 0.3 |
| September | 24.1 °C (75 °F) | 20.9 °C (70 °F) | 25.1 °C | 1.1 |
| October | 20.7 °C (69 °F) | 17.6 °C (64 °F) | 23.1 °C | 3.5 |
| November | 17.5 °C (64 °F) | 14.4 °C (58 °F) | 21.1 °C | 5.7 |
October is warmer than May by sea temperature and cheaper than June. Rain days are still few: about 20 mm across the whole month. Figures current in Q4 2026.
October weather on Santorini
October is a shoulder month that behaves more like late summer than autumn for most of its run. Here is what the averages actually mean day to day.
Temperature, rain and wind
The average daytime high in October is 20.7 °C (69 °F) and the average low is 17.6 °C (64 °F). These are sea-moderated averages, so a sunny afternoon on land in Fira or Oia usually feels warmer, often around 23 to 25 °C, while the caldera breeze keeps the rim comfortable.
Rain totals about 20 mm across the month, spread over roughly 3.5 rain days. That is a real step up from September's 1.1 days but a long way from November's 32 mm. When it rains it usually rains for a few hours, not for days, and the sky clears again.
Wind is the practical thing to watch. The island's mean daily maximum wind speed sits between 28 and 37 km/h all year, and October can deliver blustery days on the exposed caldera rim. The fierce summer meltemi fades this month, so boat cancellations become less common than in July and August, but any open-water trip still depends on the morning forecast.
Can you still swim?
Yes for most of the month. The sea averages 23.1 °C in October, warmer than the air some mornings, and that is warmer than the sea around Santorini in May (19.3 °C). Locals and visiting Greeks swim well into November, when the average is still 21.1 °C.
The swimming that matters most here is off a boat. The hot springs at Palea Kameni stay warm year round because the iron-rich water seeps from the volcanic islet, and every caldera cruise includes a stop. For black-sand swimming, Perissa and Kamari keep sunbeds out through October, though rows thin out and tavernas cut hours after mid-month.
Our pick: do your swimming in the first three weeks. Late October brings the odd grey day and the first real chance of a cool wind from the north, when a caldera rim walk beats a beach.
Early, mid or late October?
Early October is effectively an extension of September: highs feel like 24 to 26 °C on the ground, the sea is at its warmest for the month and every summer business is still open. It is the best part of the month for a first visit that wants summer light without summer queues.
Mid October is the balance point. Weather stays reliable, cruise numbers dip, and hotels begin their shoulder rates in earnest. This is the stretch we would pick for a couple's trip that wants the caldera views and a catamaran cruise without peak pricing.
Late October is quieter again and the cheapest, but two things change. Opening hours at the archaeological sites step down, and the odd autumn system can bring a wet, windy day. Pack a layer and a plan for a museum day and late October still works well.
Crowds, prices and cruise ships in October
October is when Santorini exhales. The change shows up first in the sunset queues and then in your hotel bill.
How busy is it, really?
The crush of July and August is gone. In Oia, the fight for a sunset railing at Oia castle softens to a comfortable crowd rather than a packed one, and the Fira to Oia hike returns to being a walk instead of a single-file queue. Restaurant waits disappear outside the prime sunset slots.
Cruise ships still call, and they still shape your day. When two or three ships anchor, the cable car and the Old Port fill from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. The difference in October is scale: the peak-season rotation thins, and after the middle of the month the heavy days become rare (our estimate). A simple rule holds all month: do Oia early morning or after 16:00 and you will barely notice the ships.
One fixed date matters. Oxi Day on 28 October is a national holiday, with parades and a free-admission day at the state sites, so expect local crowds that day rather than tourist ones.
What you pay in October
October rates sit below the June to September peak, and soft further as the month goes on. Cave houses and caldera-view suites that command top dollar in August discount first, which makes Imerovigli and Firostefani better value relative to Oia than they are in summer. See our guides to hotels and budget stays for how the areas compare.
Two fixed government charges apply in October. The climate crisis resilience fee is paid at the property, per room per night, from April to October: €2 for 1-2 star properties, €5 for 3 star, €10 for 4 star, €15 for 5 star and villas, and €8 for short-term rentals like Airbnb. Second, the cruise passenger fee charged through the line drops from €20 in summer to €12 in April, May and October.
Everyday costs do not move. The KTEL bus from Fira to Oia stays $2.46 (€2.20), the ride to Perissa or Athinios port is $3.02 (€2.70) and the cable car is $11.19 (€10) one way. Our full maths lives on the is Santorini expensive page.
What closes in October
The island does not shut, it thins. Hotels, pharmacies, the main bus lines, the caldera restaurants and the big wineries trade all month. What disappears is the summer tail: some beach bars on Perissa and Kamari, a share of the caldera cocktail bars and the seasonal shops that opened only for the peak, mostly in the last two weeks of the month.
Museums and sites change their hours rather than closing. Akrotiri runs long all October but steps down twice, and the Fira museums stay on their 08:30-15:30 schedule. Wineries are the safe bet for a grey afternoon: Santo Wines is open all year and takes online bookings, and tasting prices are listed on the winery's booking page rather than published here. Full opening details for every site are on our tickets page.
Opening hours and tickets in October
October has two sets of hours: the long ones that run to mid-month and the shorter ones after. Build your site-seeing days around the table below.
Akrotiri, the month's headline site
Akrotiri is the Bronze Age town buried by the great Theran eruption of the 16th or late 17th century BC, excavated since 1967, with multi-storey houses, sewers and wall paintings still in place. The town was evacuated before the eruption, which is why archaeologists have found almost no human remains and just a single gold object, a golden goat found in 1999.
In October the roofed site is open 08:00-18:30 with last entry at 18:00 from the first to the fifteenth of the month, then 08:00-18:00 with last entry at 17:30 from the sixteenth to the thirty-first. Monday and Thursday run 08:30-15:30 all year. Admission is $22.40 (€20) for adults and $11.19 (€10) reduced.
The free-admission day on 28 October is a genuine saving but draws a local crowd after the parade, so go early or accept the queue. Our pick for depth: book a private archaeologist-led walk of Akrotiri style guided visit and pair the site with the Red Beach viewpoint above it.
Everything else, hour by hour
Ancient Thera, the Dorian city of the 9th century BC on the summit of Mesa Vouno above Kamari, keeps summer hours in October: 08:30-15:30, closed Wednesdays, admission $11.19 (€10) or $5.59 (€5) reduced. Its stated average visit is 1.5 hours, and the road up from Kamari is winding. From November it drops to weekends only, so October is your last easy month.
In Fira, the Museum of Prehistoric Thera holds the wall paintings and everyday objects from the Akrotiri excavation. It opens 08:30-15:30 and closes Tuesdays, at $11.19 (€10). The Archaeological Museum of Thera keeps the same 08:30-15:30 schedule but stays open until 21:00 on Saturdays, also $11.19 (€10).
The cable car from Fira down to the Old Port runs 07:00-22:00 through October, with the last trip from the top at 21:40 and a car every 20 minutes. The one-way fare is $11.19 (€10), with children and luggage at $5.59 (€5). Ignore any site advertising a combined archaeological ticket: no official combined ticket is on sale, despite what older blogs claim.
A October week that works
The longer daylight of early October suits a big first day, and the shorter afternoons later in the month suit a slower rhythm. Two patterns cover it.
Early October: take the cool of the morning for the caldera rim walk from Fira to Oia, our estimate about 10 km and 3 to 5 hours, then a long lunch and a late swim. Save Akrotiri for its 08:00 opening and you are out by 11:00 with the whole day ahead.
Late October: front-load the outdoor sights, because the light fades and the sites close at 18:00 or earlier. A caldera cruise leaves midday and returns by sunset, which makes it the natural anchor of any short stay. If you only have a weekend, our one day, two day and three day itineraries already assume October-style hours.
Beaches and boat days in October
The sea is the argument for October. Beach time becomes a bonus rather than the whole point, and the water is the warmest part of the day.
Which beaches still work
Perissa and Kamari, the two black-sand strands on the southeast coast, are the most reliable in October. Sunbed rows stay out through the month, tavernas along the promenade keep serving and the water at 23.1 °C is warmer than the sea in May. Bus fares from Fira hold at $3.02 (€2.70) to Perissa and the same to the Kamari side.
For drama, Vlychada at the south end has wind-carved grey cliffs and the island's small marina, reached by bus from Fira for $3.13 (€2.80). Its lighter crowds make it our pick for a quiet October beach afternoon. Ammoudi below Oia is more a swim off rocks than a beach, worth it after the cliff-top walk down.
Red Beach near Akrotiri is a look, not a swim this year: the land path is closed by the municipality for rockfall danger, a restriction tightened after the February 2025 earthquake. See it from the viewpoint above or from a boat. The full set of options is on our Santorini beaches page.
Boat days: why October is the smart month
A caldera or south-coast cruise is the single best use of an October day. The water is warm enough for the swim stops, the decks are not jammed and the afternoon light on the cliffs is softer than the hard glare of August. Wind is the only real risk, and October's blowy days are fewer than in the summer meltemi months, though the island's year-round mean daily maximum wind still runs 28-37 km/h, so book with a free-cancellation window.
Two routes dominate. The south-coast run from Vlychada passes Red Beach and White Beach and the Akrotiri lighthouse with snorkel stops. The caldera run crosses to Nea Kameni, where you walk the crater trail of the volcano that built the island's modern shape, then swims in the warm springs off Palea Kameni. Note that the volcano's €5 park fee is paid on the island on top of most boat tickets.
Sunset sailings finish the day on the water with the caldera rim behind you, which in October means claiming no railing at all. Our comparison of every option is on the Santorini boat tours page.
The walk you should do this month
October is the best month of the year for the caldera rim path. Summer turns it into a hot, exposed slog. In October the temperature sits in the low twenties, the light is angled and the villages along the way are calm.
The route runs from Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli, past the rock of Skaros, site of the medieval castle-town, and on to Oia. No official length is published, but our estimate is about 10 km and 3 to 5 hours at an unhurried pace. Start by 09:00, carry water and wear real shoes, because the path is paved and rocky in stretches rather than a dirt trail.
Do it in that direction and you finish in Oia for a late lunch above Ammoudi Bay, with the option of a swim before the bus back to Fira for $2.46 (€2.20). If you would rather have company, guided versions of the same walk run all month.
Food, wine and evenings in October
October is harvest aftermath and taverna season proper. The island's food calendar peaks exactly when the tour groups thin out.
Wine country in October
Santorini's vines are harvested in August, but October is when the wineries are most pleasant to visit: cellars are working through the new vintage, the summer coaches have thinned and the low basket-trained vines (kouloura, grown that way against the wind) are at their most photogenic in afternoon light. The island's whites are built on Assyrtiko, with Athiri and Aidani alongside, and the sun-dried sweet Vinsanto as the classic finish.
Santo Wines above the caldera near Pyrgos is the cooperative's year-round wine centre and takes bookings online, though its tasting prices are listed on the winery's booking page rather than published here. The Megalochori village cluster and the Pyrgos hillside hold most of the other serious names, and our wineries page compares them.
Our pick for the month is a late-afternoon tour that times tastings to end at sunset, since October sunsets land early enough to make that an easy plan rather than a marathon.
What to eat and where
The island's cooking is built on what the volcanic soil allows: fava from yellow split peas, cherry tomatoes, white eggplant, capers and fresh fish. October menus lean into the year's catch and the last of the summer produce, and tavernas that were turning tables in August have time to cook properly again.
Fira and Oia hold the range, from takeaway souvlaki to tasting menus, but the value in October moves to the inland villages. Pyrgos, Megalochori and Emporio feed locals all year, and their square tavernas charge a fraction of the caldera price for the same fava and tomato fritters. The details are on our where to eat and Santorini food pages.
If you want the food to be the activity, two options run year round: a hands-on class with a Greek chef covering salad, tzatziki, tomato fritters and pastitsio, and a walking tasting tour through Fira and Firostefani. Both suit an October evening, when dinner starts at a civilised hour and the streets are quiet.
Evenings and Oxi Day
Nights in October are cool rather than cold, with lows around 17.6 °C (64 °F), so a light jacket covers every evening. The caldera bars in Fira and the sunset terraces of Oia stay open all month, though some seasonal spots in the beach towns close in the last two weeks. The open-air cinema in Fira typically finishes its season early in the month, so check locally before planning an evening around it. Broader options are on our nightlife page.
The calendar's one big date is 28 October, Oxi Day, marking Greece's refusal of an ultimatum in 1940. Schools parade, the archaeological sites waive admission and the towns fill with families in the morning. It is a good day to see the island act like itself rather than a resort. Plan transport early, because the parade closes streets in the centres.
For the classic sunset without the crowd, October lets you use the alternatives: Imerovigli's ramparts, the Skaros path or a boat sitting off Oia. Each is a five-minute walk from somewhere quieter than the castle walls.
Getting around and staying practical in October
October strips the island back to its permanent infrastructure: buses, the cable car, the port and the airport. That is all you need.
Buses, cars and arrivals
The KTEL bus network is the October workhorse. Fira is the hub, and the lines you will actually use are Fira to Oia (11.8 km, $2.46 or €2.20), Fira to Imerovigli, Kamari, Pyrgos, Megalochori or the Akrotiri area (all $2.46 or €2.20), Fira to Perissa or Athinios port ($3.02 or €2.70) and Fira to Vlychada ($3.13 or €2.80). Pay the conductor on board. Departure times are seasonal and change with demand, so check the KTEL timetable PDF rather than any printed schedule.
The airport sits about 6 km southeast of Fira on the Kamari side, and the bus line out there costs the standard $2.46 (€2.20). The ferry port at Athinios is 18 km from Fira. Both arrival routes, plus the cruise tender port, are covered on our getting around page.
A rental car or quad earns its keep in October for the inland villages and the wineries, where buses run less often. If you rent a quad, know that Greek law requires a licence valid for the engine size, above 50 cc that means a motorcycle category, and an International Driving Permit is required for non-EU licences. Full rules are on our rental page.
What to pack and health basics
Pack for three weathers in one suitcase. Days call for summer clothes and swimwear, with the sea at 23.1 °C. Evenings need trousers and a light jacket at 17.6 °C lows. And every October bag needs a folded rain layer, because those 3 or 4 wet days can arrive in one cluster.
Shoes matter more than in summer. The caldera path, the Skaros trail and the lanes of Emporio and Pyrgos are all better in closed shoes than sandals, and a windy day on the rim turns flimsy footwear into a bad idea. Sunscreen stays on the list, the October sun still burns on open water.
Practical basics: the emergency number is 112 for police, ambulance and fire, and Santorini General Hospital in Karterados runs a 24-hour emergency department. The island is calm seismically since the 2025 swarm in the wider zone subsided in spring of that year, and the volcano itself did not erupt. Our safety page has the full picture.
Where to base yourself
October changes the calculus on where to stay. With pools too cool for most days and evenings crisp, a caldera-view cave house earns its premium less than a big comfortable room does, and the shoulder-season discounts reward the villages that were pricey in August.
Our ranking for the month: Imerovigli for the quietest stretch of the rim and the best views per euro once discounts land, Firostefani for a five-minute walk into Fira with half the noise, and Fira itself if you want the bus hub on your doorstep and no dependence on evening transport. Oia is the postcard choice and October is when its hotel rates come closest to reasonable.
For a village feel with tavernas that trade all year, Pyrgos and Megalochori inland are the value plays, a ten-minute drive from everything. Compare all of them on our where to stay page, or go straight to budget picks.
An October week, day by day
October rewards a slower rhythm than summer: one anchor activity a day, swim or walk in the middle, and the sunset wherever you happen to be.
Days one to three: the rim and the water
Day one, arrive and settle. If you land at the airport, the bus into Fira costs $2.46 (€2.20). Walk Firostefani to Imerovigli along the rim in the late afternoon, when the light is best and the paths are empty, and eat in Fira.
Day two, the sea. Take a five-hour catamaran: the south-coast route past Red Beach and White Beach if you want the swimming, or the caldera route with the volcano walk if you want the geology. In October the midday departures hit the warmest water. Book with free cancellation and check the forecast the night before.
Day three, the walk. Start in Fira by 09:00 and take the rim path to Oia, roughly our estimate of 3 to 5 hours with long stops. Lunch in Oia, then either stay for the sunset from a quiet terrace or drop to Ammoudi for a swim before the bus back. The full version of this plan is on our three day itinerary.
Days four to six: south and inland
Day four, antiquity. Be at Akrotiri for opening, 08:00, and take a guide if the site's story matters to you. Walk up to the Red Beach viewpoint afterwards since the shore path itself is closed by the municipality. Lunch in Akrotiri village and finish at the lighthouse for the island's best western exposure.
Day five, wine and villages. Morning in Pyrgos, the hilltop village with the island's best views over the plain, then tastings at two wineries around Megalochori, ending at Santo Wines above the caldera for the sunset if the timing works.
Day six, the east side. Bus to Kamari, climb or drive up Mesa Vouno to Ancient Thera in the morning while the site is quiet, then swim off the black sand in the afternoon. From November Ancient Thera drops to weekend openings, which is why this day belongs in your October plan.
Day seven and the easy swaps
Day seven, keep it flexible. Weather in late October can hand you one grey day, and this is where it goes: the Museum of Prehistoric Thera and the Archaeological Museum of Thera in Fira, both open 08:30-15:30, then a long lunch and a winery tasting. If the day is fine instead, take the cable car down to the Old Port and walk the boat-lined quay, riding back up rather than facing the hundreds of steps.
Three swaps worth knowing. If a north wind kills your boat day, move it and take the hike instead, the rim path is sheltered by morning. If Oia is busier than you like, Imerovigli's parapets give you the same caldera angle in silence. And if you have a car for one day only, make it the inland day, because Pyrgos, Megalochori and Emporio are exactly where the buses are thinnest.
Shorter trips: our one day and two day plans compress this same logic, and the map page puts every stop in one picture.
What a day out costs in October
The table compares the best-rated ways to spend a day this month, from the full tour listings for this page. All are five-hour days unless noted, and every one includes the swim stops that make an October boat day worth booking.

Is October a good time to go to Santorini?
Yes, and for many travellers it is the best month. You get 20.7 °C (69 °F) average highs, a sea of 23.1 °C, far fewer crowds than summer and falling prices. The trade-offs are shorter site hours, a light jacket after dark and the small chance of a wet day, with about 3.5 rain days in the month. Compare it with the other months on the best time to visit page.
Can you swim in the sea in October?
Comfortably for most of the month. The sea averages 23.1 °C, which is warmer than May and warmer than the air on many mornings. Perissa and Kamari keep sunbeds out all month, and the swim stops on any catamaran cruise are the warmest water of your day. Late October brings the first cool northerlies, so plan your swimming days early in a stay.
What is the weather like on Santorini in October?
Mild and mostly dry. Average highs are 20.7 °C (69 °F) and lows 17.6 °C (64 °F), with about 20 mm of rain over roughly 3.5 days. A land thermometer on the caldera rim usually reads a couple of degrees above the averages in the afternoon. Wind is the variable: the island's mean daily maximum runs 28-37 km/h all year, so check the forecast before booking a boat. Full numbers on our weather page.
Do things close in October?
The island thins rather than closes. Hotels, buses, the caldera restaurants and the big wineries trade all month, while some beach bars and seasonal shops wind up in the last two weeks. The archaeological sites adjust hours instead: Akrotiri steps down from 08:00-18:30 to 08:00-18:00 partway through the month, and the Fira museums stay at 08:30-15:30. Details are on our tickets page.
Is October cheaper than summer?
Yes on accommodation, roughly level on everything else. Hotels discount from their June to September peak, and rates soften further late in the month, which makes the caldera villages noticeably better value. Fixed costs do not move: the bus to Oia is still $2.46 (€2.20), the cable car $11.19 (€10). Two government charges drop this month, with the cruise passenger fee at €12 instead of €20 and the resilience fee on its final April-October rates. The full budget is on our costs page.
Which Greek island is still hot in October?
The southern islands keep the heat longest, and Santorini does well among them with a sea still at 23.1 °C. Crete and Rhodes edge it on land temperature, while the Cyclades as a group stay swim-friendly through October. What Santorini adds in this month is the caldera setting, the wineries and the site openings that keep wet or windy days productive rather than wasted.
How busy is Oia at sunset in October?
Busy but no longer packed. The August crush around the castle walls relaxes into a comfortable crowd, and after mid-month, with fewer cruise rotations, a quiet terrace is easy to find (our estimate). If you want the view without anyone at all, walk fifteen minutes to the Imerovigli parapets or watch it from a sunset sailing. The alternatives are on our sunset page.
What should I pack for an October trip?
Three layers of wardrobe: summer clothes and swimwear for days at 20.7 °C average highs, trousers and a light jacket for evenings at 17.6 °C lows, and a folded rain layer for the month's few wet days. Add closed shoes for the rim walk and the village lanes, and sunscreen, which still matters on the water. Anything forgotten is easy to buy in Fira, where shops trade all month.
