Santorini Boat Tour Guide: Every Cruise Compared

A Santorini boat tour is the only way to see the caldera walls, the volcano and Red Beach from the water, and the one day of a trip that no bus or path can replace. This guide compares every type of Santorini sailing trip, from a $31.28 volcano boat to a private catamaran, and tells you which one fits your day, budget and stomach for wind. If you are still building the rest of your trip, start with our things to do in Santorini shortlist and the Santorini volcano and Santorini hot springs pages that explain what you actually see from the boat. It is part of our Santorini, Greece travel guide.

Quick answer Which boat should you book?

There are two kinds of Santorini boat tour. Volcano cruises from Fira Old Port cost from about $31.28 to $35.32, walk the Nea Kameni crater and swim at the hot springs, and the €5 park fee is paid on top. Catamaran cruises cost roughly $67.27 to $148.73 for five hours with BBQ, drinks and swim stops, and sunset departures cost more. Our pick for a first visit: the Premium Small-Group Catamaran Cruise with BBQ, Open Bar, Transfer, because it covers the south coast, the springs and food in one five-hour trip.

Which Kind of Santorini Boat Tour Suits You

Santorini sailing trips fall into four clear families, and the right one depends on budget, sea legs and how much of the caldera you want to cover. This table puts the four side by side so you can pick a lane before browsing boats.

Type Typical price Route Best for
Volcano and hot springs cruise from $31.28 to $35.32 Fira Old Port to Nea Kameni, then a swim at Palea Kameni, sometimes Thirassia Walking a live crater on a small budget, cruise passengers on short hours
Day catamaran cruise $67.27 to $148.73 Vlychada or the caldera, past Red Beach, White Beach and the Akrotiri lighthouse Swimming, snorkelling, BBQ on board, the classic five-hour day
Sunset catamaran cruise Same boats, sunset slots cost more Cliff line under sail as the light goes, often from Oia or Vlychada Couples and photographers who want the Santorini sunset from the water
Traditional boat or private charter varies by boat Wooden caique routes from Ammoudi, or the whole boat to yourselves Small groups, a quieter deck, a route you set

Every boat family sails the same flooded caldera, so you cannot really go wrong. You can only overpay for features you will not use.

Volcano and Hot Springs Boat Tours

The cheapest Santorini boat tour is also the most active: you land on Nea Kameni, walk the crater trail for about 1.5 hours on the classic route and swim in the warm iron-rich water off Palea Kameni.

The Volcano Cruise: What You Actually Get

The volcano boat is the original Santorini boat tour, and at $31.28 to $35.32 it is also the cheapest way onto the water.

Why Nea Kameni exists

The caldera was formed when the Minoan eruption, around 1600 BC, blew the centre out of the island and the sea flooded the collapse basin. The dark islet in the middle, Nea Kameni, is new land built by eruptions over the two millennia since, with major episodes in 1707-1712, 1866-1870, 1925-1928 and 1939-1941. The last small eruption was a lava dome in 1950, so you are walking on rock barely a lifetime old. The islet is about 2 km across and the crater trail crosses black lava fields with sulphur vents.

Boats reach Nea Kameni only, since it is an island with no road, and the crossing from Fira Old Port takes minutes rather than hours. The Santorini volcano tour page covers the crater walk in detail, and the eruption story is told in full in our minoan eruption guide.

The hot springs swim

Next to Nea Kameni lies its older sibling Palea Kameni, and in one of its bays warm, iron-rich water stains the rocks orange. Boats anchor offshore because the shallows are rocky, and you swim in from a ladder at the boat's side to the warm band of water. The water temperature is not officially published, and the iron leaves a faint rusty tint on light swimwear, so wear the dark pair.

This stop is short, and it is the part of a Santorini boat tour that people either love or shrug at. If a warm swim matters to you, check that the listing names the springs explicitly, as the port cruise to volcano, hot springs and Thirassia does. Our Santorini hot springs page has the full picture.

The €5 fee and the extras

Landing on Nea Kameni means entering the volcano park, and the boat operators list a €5 ($5.59) entrance fee paid on the island, on top of the ticket. The classic three-hour route from Fira Old Port gives about 1.5 hours on the crater trail, then the springs. Longer six-hour versions add a stop on Thirassia, the inhabited island on the west rim of the caldera.

Budget the full morning or afternoon for it: transfers, the crossing, the walk and the swim add up. Wear trainers, take water and a hat, because there is no shade on the lava. If you are arriving on a cruise ship, this is the shore excursion that fits a short port call best, and our Santorini cruise port page explains the tender logistics.

The Catamaran Cruise: The Five-Hour Classic

A Santorini catamaran cruise is what Santorini sailing usually means, and the format barely varies between operators.

The route and the stops

Nearly every day catamaran leaves from Vlychada marina in the south or from the caldera side, and follows the same line: the strange sculpted cliffs of Vlychada beach, then Red Beach seen from the water, White Beach, the Akrotiri lighthouse, and round to the hot springs for a swim before food is served on deck. Red Beach matters here, because the land path has been closed by the municipality for rockfall danger, a ban that dates back years and was hardened after the 2025 earthquake, so the boat viewpoint is one of the few ways left to see it.

The whole run hugs the caldera cliffs and give the trip its drama. Five hours sounds long on paper and passes quickly once the swimming and the BBQ start.

What the price difference buys

Listings run from $67.27 to $148.73 for essentially the same five hours. The cheapest tiers include a meal and drinks but sell the group larger and the menu simpler. Mid-priced options such as the classic catamaran with BBQ, drinks and transfers at $91.52 add transfers, towels and snorkelling gear. The premium end, the premium small-group catamaran at $148.73 and the half-day exclusive cruise at $123.56, caps the boat at 18 to 20 guests, pours an open bar with local wine and Prosecco, and cooks a fuller BBQ.

Our pick is the premium small-group boat. The difference over the cheapest tier is roughly the price of a taverna dinner, and it buys you space to sit and a bar that keeps pouring.

Morning or afternoon

Most catamarans run two departures, a late-morning slot and a sunset slot, and the same boat often does both. The morning trip has flatter light for the cliff colours, calmer wind before the afternoon meltemi builds, and cheaper prices. The sunset departure ends under the famous light over the caldera, which is why it sells out first and costs more.

The July and August meltemi wind is the honest risk: operators cancel on weather and a free-cancellation booking protects you. Sea state also matters for the swim stops, so if you are prone to seasickness take the morning slot and sit aft. Season-by-season odds of calm sea are on our Santorini weather and best time to visit pages.

The Santorini Sunset Cruise

A Santorini sunset cruise is the same catamaran or a traditional boat timed so the last hour is spent under the caldera cliffs as the light goes.

Why the water beats the land

The famous Oia sunset crowd packs the castle walls shoulder to shoulder, and our Oia and Santorini sunset pages explain how tight it gets. On a boat you get the same sun dropping into the same sea, with a drink in hand and nobody's elbow in frame. The caldera cliffs turn copper, the white villages on the rim catch the last light, and the boat drifts rather than motors.

Sunset in summer falls late, after 20:00, so the sunset slots run from late afternoon into the evening, which is why operators fold dinner into them. If you are in Imerovigli or Firostefani, the transfer included with most catamarans solves the late return.

The traditional caique alternative

Alongside the sailing cats, wooden Greek caiques run sunset routes, some departing from Oia and Ammoudi with groups capped near 10 guests, serving a Greek dinner on board and stopping at Thirassia and the springs. They are slower and lower, which suits people who find catamarans corporate. The trade-off is that the volcano hike is usually not included on these boats.

The harbour below Oia is reached by steps or a winding road, so allow time to get down for a departure from there. For a quieter evening overall, our Santorini nightlife and free things to do in Santorini pages cover the land-based alternatives.

Where Santorini Boat Tours Leave From

Four harbours serve Santorini sailing trips, and picking the wrong one can cost you an hour of bus connections.

Fira Old Port (Gialos)

The small harbour directly below Fira, at the foot of the caldera cliff about 220 m under the town. Cruise tenders land here, and the volcano boats depart from here. You get down by the cable car, one way $11.19 (€10) with a ride of about 3 minutes and a car every 20 minutes, or on foot down the Karavolades stairs, several hundred switchback steps. A share of each cable car ticket goes to the mule drivers.

If your Santorini boat tour offers hotel pick-up, take it, because the stairs in August heat are a workout. The Santorini cable car page has the full timetable.

Vlychada, Ammoudi and Athinios

Vlychada marina in the south is the catamaran harbour, reached by KTEL bus from Fira for $3.13 (€2.80) or by the transfers most catamaran tickets include. Ammoudi, below Oia, serves the traditional boats and the sunset caiques, and Oia itself is 11.8 km from Fira by bus at $2.46 (€2.20). Athinios, the main ferry port, is a pickup point for some volcano cruises, with the Fira bus at $3.02 (€2.70).

Practical rule: if transfers are included in the listing price, the few dollars of difference versus the no-transfer version are usually worth paying. Bus departure times are seasonal and only in the KTEL PDF, so see getting around Santorini and Athinios port for the connections.

How to Book and What Can Go Wrong

A Santorini boat tour is easy to book and easy to get wrong in small ways that cost a morning. These are the five things to check before you pay.

Wind, cancellations and the small print

The mean daily maximum wind on the island runs 28-37 km/h all year, and the July and August meltemi is the reason boat trips get cancelled. Operators hold a weather clause, so a cancelled Santorini sailing trip is usually refunded or moved, but a same-week replacement slot can be hard to get in peak season. Book early in your stay, not on your last day, and choose a listing with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead, which the catamarans on this page carry.

Book two or three days out in summer for the small-group boats. The big volcano boats have more capacity and can be booked a day ahead, our estimate.

Hidden extras and honest totals

Read the included list before comparing headline prices. Volcano landings carry the €5 park fee paid on the island. Some catamaran listings sell a cheaper no-transfer version, which is fine if you have a Santorini car rental or are happy on the bus. Mandatory extras listed at checkout, rather than in the headline, are the trap: the private car option on this page starts at $57.20 plus extras, so the true number only appears at checkout.

Also weigh what a boat day displaces. Akrotiri costs $22.40 (€20) to enter and deserves half a day, and our Santorini costs page shows how a boat tour fits a full island budget.

What to bring on any boat

Take a dark swimsuit, because the iron-rich spring water tints light fabric, plus a towel on the boats that do not supply one, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and a light layer, because the wind on the water is cooler than on land. Trainers for the volcano trail, water for the crater walk. Seasickness tablets if you are prone, taken before boarding rather than after the first swell.

Leave the drone at the hotel unless the listing allows them, and keep phones in a waterproof pouch for the swim stops. Families should note that the springs swim involves climbing back up a boat ladder, so young children need a confident adult alongside, and our Santorini with kids page covers the wider picture.

Boat Tour or Land Day: Making the Call

A Santorini boat tour costs more than most land days, so it helps to know what it replaces and what it does not.

What only a boat can give you

Three sights on this island are now effectively water-only. Red Beach is closed by land because of rockfall danger, so the viewpoint from above or a boat is all you get. The Santorini hot springs sit in a bay with no road. And the caldera cliffs, which are the island's defining feature, are genuinely best seen from sea level looking up, not from the rim looking down.

Add the swimming, which no land itinerary matches, and the case for one boat day per trip is strong. If you only have a short stay, our Santorini in 2 days and Santorini itinerary plans slot a boat into day two.

What a boat cannot give you

A boat day will not show you Akrotiri's Bronze Age streets, the hilltop ruins of Ancient Thera at $11.19 (€10), or the villages of Pyrgos and Megalochori. It will not get you to Perissa beach for a long cheap swim, and it does not include the wineries. If your dates are short, do the volcano boat for the crater and springs and spend the other half-day on land.

Cruise passengers with only hours ashore should read Santorini shore excursions first, because tender timing decides which boat you can realistically catch.

Pair Your Boat Day With

These are the stops that slot naturally before or after a Santorini boat tour, most of them within a short bus ride of the harbours.

Santorini Boat Tour FAQ

How long is a boat ride from Santorini to Crete?

Not stated in our sources. Scheduled ferries between Santorini and Crete run seasonally and their durations and fares vary by date and operator, so we do not print a figure. What we can say is that these are ferry crossings rather than boat tours, and day-trip options by sea are covered on our day trips from Santorini page.

Which islands can I visit from Santorini by boat tour?

Within a Santorini boat tour, the practical islands are Nea Kameni for the volcano, Palea Kameni for the hot springs and Thirassia, the inhabited island on the caldera's west rim, which several volcano cruises stop at. Longer trips to other Cyclades are ferry journeys, not tours. Thirassia itself has a page here.

How can I reach the hot springs in Santorini?

Only by boat. The springs sit in a bay of Palea Kameni with no road access. Boats anchor offshore and you swim in from the ladder to the warm, iron-rich water, which can tint light swimwear. The volcano cruises from around $31.28 include the stop, and the €5 park fee applies only if you land on Nea Kameni. Details: Santorini hot springs.

Can you cruise to Santorini on a large ship?

Yes, and cruise ships anchor in the caldera with tenders landing at Fira Old Port. Since the 2025 law there is a cruise passenger fee of €20 from June to September, €12 in April, May and October and €4 from November to March, charged through the cruise line. Disembarkation logistics are on our Santorini cruise port page.

Is the volcano hike hard?

No. The classic route gives about 1.5 hours on a trail over black lava with some loose ground and no shade, but little climbing. Wear trainers, take water and a hat. The €5 park fee is paid on the island on top of most boat tickets. The full walk is described on our Santorini volcano tour page.

Do boat tours run all year?

The main season runs with the warm months, and schedules thin out in winter when the sea is cooler and the wind less predictable. Operators cancel on weather, and the meltemi of July and August is the main cause. For month-by-month sea temperatures and wind, see Santorini weather and best time to visit Santorini.

Is a private Santorini catamaran worth it?

For groups of six or more, our view is yes. Taking the whole boat narrows the price gap with premium shared tickets and buys you a route and timetable you set. Below that group size the premium small-group catamarans deliver most of the experience for less. If you want private but on land instead, the tailor-made car and driver option starts at $57.20 plus extras.

Ready to Pick Your Boat

Choose the volcano boat at $35.32 for the crater, or our pick, the premium small-group catamaran at $148.73, and book with free cancellation in case the meltemi intervenes.

Every option on this page can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before departure, so you can lock a slot now and decide later.
